A SAFE & HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TOTSAFE!
Trick
or treating:
No child
should ever go trick-or-treating alone.
They
should follow these guidelines:
- Walk
on sidewalks.
- Never
cut across yards or use alleyways.
- Obey
all traffic and pedestrian regulations, making
sure to look left, right, and left again before
crossing a street.
- Always
walk. Never run across a street.
- Only
cross the street as a group, and only cross at
corners. Use crosswalks where they exist.
- Never
assume the right of way. Motorists may have
trouble seeing trick-or-treaters. And just because
one car stops, that doesn't mean others will.
- Remove
any mask or item that will limit eyesight before
crossing a street or driveway.
* If
your town doesn't offer alternatives to residential
trick-or-treating, consider hosting a Halloween party
at your house for neighborhood kids on the big night
in lieu of going door-to-door.
* In
some towns, trick-or-treating is done from store to
store instead of house to house. Or children
trick-or-treat at shops in local malls.
If you
don't feel comfortable allowing your children to go
trick-or-treating from house to house, ask your local
chamber of commerce or police station about such
alternatives.
Candy:
Though
tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely
examine all treats and throw away any spoiled,
unwrapped, or suspicious items. Check candy packages
for pinholes and torn wrapping. Avoid loose fruit and
baked goods.
In
general, this means keeping them away from children
under five.
Preparing
your home:
The
American Academy of Pediatrics has online
instructions for what to do in case such an
emergency arises, but this is not a substitute for an
approved class—and it's not just for Halloween-time.
